Hi there! I am so happy you are here reading this today and I hope it brings awareness of homelessness to your life. Please be sure to check out our other blog posts, our podcast and let’s get into it!

The focus of this blog is to bring awareness of homelessness, particularly in America, but to start I figured it would make sense to look at homelessness throughout the world. In the world today many people are living without a home and many more do not have a stable income to support their current living option. According to make-the-shift.org, “150 million people around the world are living in homelessness. That’s equivalent to the entire population of the UK and France combined”. With two entire countries worth of people without housing, it would make sense that the government would be trying to do something about it or bringing more awareness towards this topic. There are many things on the political agenda, however, the basic human need for shelter, food and income might need to be placed at a higher priority. A majority of those who are homeless cannot afford housing, but check out my other blog post on the causes of homelessness if you want to learn more! If you too are passionate about this topic, definitely bring it up to those in political office within your community.

Taking a look at homelessness in America there is a large amount of individuals and families living without homes. According to endhomelessness.org in January 2020 about 70% of the homeless were individuals and the remainder were families with children. It is also important to note that race ties into homelessness as well. According to the same website, those of color may experience less opportunity to get jobs, apply for housing or limited access to health resources. All of these limitations on certain races are hard to get out of the system. They last years and in order to get them to an equal standard as others, opportunities provided need to be equal. There are many roots of homelessness and race plays a large one in America. Opportunities for income are important to have just as having job training or interview preparations are. Having these resources available can help greatly.

According to the New York Times, homelessness has risen in America for the past 4 years making this issue even more important to solve. The global pandemic, COVID-19, has made these numbers also rise. The pandemic has been around the United States for about 2 years now and continues to influence those who are homeless. Shelters had to be closed due to spatial restrictions, limited staff as well as supplies. This need for shelter is ever present in America today and the pandemic has emphasized that greatly. Prices are rising and supplies are becoming more limited, not making it any easier for individuals to get out of poverty. Let us be the light in their world and help one homeless person.

Homelessness in America is growing. Homelessness in America is a big issue. Homelessness in America matters. There are many issues that leaders are working on and homelessness should be at the top of this list. Spread the word, educate others, be that hope for someone and most importantly take action!

In spreading homelessness awareness, let us do so in love and kindness giving others hope! I hope this post gave you some background on the status of homelessness in America and more insight as to what you can do. As always, please feel free to reach out with any additional questions, information or just to say hi!
